Discrete groups and internal symmetries of icosahedral viral capsids
نویسنده
چکیده
A classification of all possible icosahedral viral capsids is proposed. It takes into account the diversity of hexamers’ compositions, leading to definite capsid size. We show how the self-organization of observed capsids during their production results from definite symmetries of constituting hexamers. The division of all icosahedral capsids into four symmetry classes is given. New subclasses implementing the action of symmetry groups Z2, Z3 and S3 are found and described. They concern special cases of highly symmetric capsids whose T = p2 + pq + q2number is of particular type corresponding to the cases (p, 0) or (p, p). AMS classification numbers: 92Bxx, 92Cxx, 60Cxx

Classification and evolutionary trends of icosahedral viral capsids
A classification of icosahedral viral capsids is proposed. We show how the self-organization of capsids during their formation implies a definite composition of their elementary building blocks. The exact number of hexamers with three different admissible symmetries is related to capsids’ sizes, labelled by their T-numbers. Simple rules determining these numbers for each value of T are deduced ...
متن کاملElasticity theory and shape transitions of viral shells.
Recently, continuum elasticity theory has been applied to explain the shape transition of icosahedral viral capsids--single-protein-thick crystalline shells--from spherical to "buckled" or faceted as their radius increases through a critical value determined by the competition between stretching and bending energies of a closed two-dimensional (2D) elastic network. In the present work we genera...
متن کاملOrientational phase transitions and the assembly of viral capsids.
We present a Landau theory for large-l orientational phase transitions and apply it to the assembly of icosahedral viral capsids. The theory predicts two distinct types of ordering transitions. Transitions dominated by the l=6,10,12, and 18 icosahedral spherical harmonics resemble robust first-order phase transitions that are not significantly affected by chirality. The remaining transitions de...
متن کامل1 Viral Self - Assembly as a Thermodynamic Process
The protein shells, or capsids, of all sphere-like viruses adopt icosahedral symmetry. In the present paper we propose a statistical thermodynamic model for viral self-assembly. We find that icosahedral symmetry is not expected for viral capsids constructed from structurally identical protein subunits and that this symmetry requires (at least) two internal “switching” configurations of the prot...
